Weekly Spending/Fitness Recap 5/23-5/29/2011

I had an awesome week last week in terms of no spend days. I brought lunch to work and I'm finally getting back into that routine again. For some reason I fell off the bandwagon after that week long business trip in April! I really forgot how easy it is to save money during the work week. Anyway, leave it to me to buy $88 ankle boots the last day of my marvelous cheap week.

Right now my method is that whatever is left in my checking account I can use to whatever my heart desires and that's what I decided to spend it on. The boots were originally $225 + s/h but I found them on sale at Bloomie's for $90 and I got $18 off using a coupon (still had to pay for tax). As you all know I'm a returnaholic so who knows, I may end up returning them if I don't like them (I ordered them online).

So that's the reason why I mentioned a shopping fund in my previous post. Thank you btw for all your comments and input, I always appreciate feedback! You all know that I buy impulsively and that's something I need to work on. I also need to continue to bring lunch to work. It's healthy (I pack salad or sandwiches and I eat greek yogurt with fruits for b-fast), easy, and saves me SO much money and gas.

Setting Up New Funds

I've been thinking about setting up a shopping fund as well as a gadget fund. I wouldn't use it impulsively but it basically would keep my finances more organized and would keep me on track with my other goals. Of course there are pros and cons to this strategy because it would be there for the purpose of shopping and well, that could lead to finding excuses to shop because I have money sitting pretty waiting to be spent. On the other hand, if I contribute to it whenever I can, I will know how much hard work it took to build it up that much. For example, my travel fund has over $1,000 in it but I don't want to spend any of it just yet. I'm waiting for that perfect opportunity to find a great deal.

BF and I are such gadget nerds and that's why I'm thinking of setting up a gadget fund. We have been talking about getting an iPad 2 for our 6 year anniversary in October but we are also debating between a TV or a PS3. Either way, I want to save up for it when the time comes. We currently have a wii right now and play Call of Duty Black Ops everyday on it with our super old TV. It would be nice to upgrade to a PS3 because COD on wii sucks so much (graphics and controller-wise).

My dilemma right now is do I even have enough money to start contributing to these new funds? 20% of my paycheck goes to retirement and most all of it goes to my down payment fund. In June, I'm going to sign up for my company's employee stock purchase plan so that's another contribution. I try to put in $100 each into my travel fund and gift fund. At that point, I wonder how much I will have left to contribute to my shopping and gadget fund? If I can at least put in $50-$100 a month I think it will work out. In total I will have a 401k, Roth IRA, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, E-Fund/Down Payment Fund, Gift Fund, Travel Fund, Shopping Fund, and Gadget Fund....8 total funds...ahh!

How much do you all contribute to your fun saving funds? How many different contributions do you make each month?

Weekly Spending/Fitness Recap 5/16-5/22/2011

Last week's recap is 2 days late this week. I have been so busy with work and life. Don't I say that every week though? So last week's spending hurt only because I had to pay for my LSAT class. I decided to just pay for it in full instead of saving up because I sold my bag. It's a great feeling to actually pay for my education because my parents have paid for my 16 years of private school and also college. I'm baking red velvet cupcakes for a coworker's birthday this week, which is why my grocery spending was high. It hurt to spend that much but I had to buy a new cupcake pan, and all the ingredients. I don't make boxed cake!

A goal this week is to buy groceries and pack lunch each day next week. I have been doing great this week and already have 3 no spend days yay! Not eating out during the week really alleviates my spending for the week.

Weekly Spending/Fitness Recap 5/9-5/15/2011

This week was super spendy because I went out to dinner with friends on Friday night and I hung out with friends I haven't seen in years on Sunday. It was worth it though and I was able to avoid going "out". Instead of going clubbing we went to a late brunch, shopping downtown, and went to a bar. It was totally worth it because although I spent $91 yesterday I got a MAC blush and shoes on sale from UO instead of just buying alcohol and paying cover at a club :). It was SO nice to see friends from my sorority who I haven't seen in ages! I do not mind spending money and time with people I love. I also returned a lot of stuff recently and they all showed up on my credit card this week so I'm counting that as this week's reimbursements.

On another note, I sold my near and dear Balenciaga 2009 RH City in black. Honestly the leather isn't what I really wanted but it is my HG (holy grail) bag. I will buy another one someday but I need the money for my down payment. I still have 2 other designer bags and I haven't really used it lately so off it goes. I'm not a hoarder, I actually feel better getting rid of my stuff especially if I get money out of it. The great part is that a gal from SD bought it, so we are meeting up (at a public place, BF is taking me) and I get cash, and I don't have to spend on shipping or paypal fees!

My goals this week are to take pilates class (I used to do pilates 3x a week and it did wonders for me), save as much as I can for my LSAT class, and put in as much as I can into my down payment fund. What are yours?

Dilemma: Going Out

Today's post covers my thoughts on going out.

Actual picture of the club I'm talking about
I'm only 23 but I don't go out often (out meaning to fancy clubs and lounges, bars on the other hand, I like). I feel like I've gotten all the crazy partying out of my system during my glorious college days and I don't think spending money on cover, alcohol and those numerous 3am burrito binges are worth it for my savings goals at this point in my life. My good friend from college is coming up this weekend and I can't help but think of all the money I will be wasting if I go out with her and her friend tonight (note: HER friend, I don't even know the gal) because they're going to a "high end club" which means cover is $20 and drinks are around $20+ (did I mention it's around $32 for a double shot?). There's always the option of drinking before heading to the club but nonetheless alcohol is expensive anywhere. I do not really even like alcohol and I have a weak tolerance for it because I don't drink often anymore.

I feel like an awful friend for not wanting to hang out tonight but I am definitely all for going out to lunch, dinner or shopping with her this weekend. When I was in college there would be no doubt that I would want to go out with friends, but after working for my hard earned money and making savings goals for myself, I find that it's hard to let loose and have fun without thinking of money. Going out to a club downtown will definitely put a dent in your wallet of at least $75 or $100 (I somehow end up buying rounds of shots for people) and unless it's my birthday or someone else's birthday I just can't justify that! It's not that I don't have enough fun either because I go out with friends and I like bars but going out sometimes seems like a huge production that costs too much money that I'd rather have in my bank account.

What are your thoughts on going out to an expensive club? Am I alone on my views?

Weekly Spending/Fitness Recap 5/2-5/8/2011

Hope everyone had a great weekend, and happy mother's day to the mothers out there :)

This past week was busy, I was recovering from illness but still went to work, worked out a bit, made time for friends, did laundry and lots of chores, worked on BF's side business...and it was generally extremely busy. What bumped up the spending this week was obviously mother's day because I got gifts for my mom, my grandma (who practically raised me) and my stepmom. All gifts were well received and I got thank you calls proceeding Friday. I love giving gifts, that's probably my hugest flaw, and if that is indeed my greatest weakness that's not too bad for a flaw I'd say!

BF and I hung out with friends on Saturday and spent a lot of money for a regular Saturday night but it was worth it. My friend is moving to SF and leaving us in SD because she got into grad school. I'm extremely happy for her but I'm trying to spend a lot of time with her before she leaves.

Lastly, there was a TaDa deal (there are too many group discount sites, can't keep track) where you buy $25 for $50 credit at SkinTerra.com. They are having a $30 off sale for May so I bought the Clarisonic Mia that I've been wanting for months now for a grand total of $94, originally $149+tax and I have to say it's absolutely WORTH IT! My skin is acne prone and I've noticed that this thing really cleans my skin and gets the make-up/dirt off completely, leaving me with skin that allows itself to breathe and absorb my moisturizer much better. Only time will tell but after a month or so I will do a review. I'm actually thinking of buying one for my mom for her bday which is coming up in July since I have a $25 off credit they sent me w/ my package.

Monday
$15 LivingSocial (gift for mother's day, flowers)

Tuesday
$25 TaDa (for $50 credit to SkinTerra)

Wednesday
$7 Lunch
$7.53 USPS (shipped mother's day gifts/cards)
Running - 1.5 miles

Thursday
$6 Lunch
$69 (Used my TaDa to get my Clarisonic!)

Friday

$22.38 Groceries

Saturday
$20 Watched the fight at my friend's house (pizza, payperview)
$20 Wal-Mart
24SET (cardio+weights class) - 1 hour

Sunday
$14.12 Lunch for 2

TOTAL SPENDING: $210.01

Unexpected Saving Plan

So I've been a lazy blogger. I haven't been tracking my finances as well this past week. I am still sick, for one, and I just need to relax. I have put the condo shopping, house building, and working out on hold for a little bit as I recover and rest. What I have been doing is thinking about my life and my future.

I always knew I would go to law school and I almost went right after college a year ago. At the time I wasn't ready and my parents paid for my LSAT prep class, but I snoozed through the entire thing and didn't attend half the classes. I was relieved to be done with college and I wasn't ready to sit through 4 hour classes at night and take prep tests every other Saturday. Now, I regret that and I wish I had followed through with it when I didn't have a job. Since I already "took" the class, to take it again is half the price - $776. Not bad but also a great deal when the class is originally $1500+. I really think it's worth it because I work full-time right now and I need someone to tell me what to do and tell me I need to do homework. I do well with routines and structure! In addition, since I will be paying for it, I'm sure I will be in the front seat of every class. I'm already familiar with the test and have taken a bunch of practice tests, I know what I'm in for and I'm definitely ready for it. Life is about challenging yourself and I really enjoy my job but I feel the need to push myself further and reach my aspirations that I have set for myself. Since I will also have to pay $139 to take the LSAT, we're looking at $915 I need to gather/save quickly before the end of July. I'm still debating on taking it in October or December, but I'm leaning towards the former because I'm ready now and I don't want to put it off.

I'm planning to set aside $305 each month starting THIS month, so by July I will have $915.

Weekly Spending and Fitness Recap 4/25-5/1/2011

Ugh, what a total fail this past week. As I suspected I caught some sort of weird flu virus. I had body aches and could not get out of bed for 2 days. I had to take sick days off from work Wed, Thurs and half day on Friday. Monday-Wednesday I can't even remember what I spent so this week's spending is a bit hazy. I'm still sick with what seems like acute bronchitis and trying to catch up at work. Life has been put on hold such as condo shopping, going to the gym, and running with the BF and dog. I feel so unproductive. Hopefully this week will be better and I will have a great May!

I'm looking forward to a lot of things this month, 2 friends are visiting San Diego on different weekends and we are going out of town for Memorial Day. I really need to kick up my savings if we want to put 20% down on our condo.

I need to start tracking my spending. The reason why this week's spending is so weird and off is because I was sick and not really paying attention and I also am starting to use my credit card because I get more points, but they do not post the transactions for a few days. I need to figure out how to track my spending via credit card, probably manually in a notebook, because when I don't track money I start buying things I don't need. My biggest problem in spending is food and I will write a lengthier post on that later. Hope everyone else has a fantastic week!
